Answer engine optimisation
Answer engine optimisation, AEO, is writing and structuring content specifically to be quoted or cited by AI assistants and AI-generated search summaries, as distinct from traditional SEO, which optimises primarily to rank in a list of blue links a human then clicks through.
Why it matters
A growing share of searches now get answered directly by an AI summary rather than a list of links to click, and content that is not structured to be cleanly extracted and quoted, a clear, standalone claim rather than a claim buried in marketing language, gets passed over for a source that is easier to cite accurately. It also rewards a specific writing structure: a clear, complete, standalone first sentence answering the implied question directly is far more likely to be lifted and quoted accurately than an answer buried three sentences into a paragraph full of qualifiers. It also benefits from explicit structure, clear headings, direct answers before elaboration, since that structure is exactly what makes a passage easy for a model to extract cleanly and attribute correctly.
What goes wrong when it's handled badly
Content written purely as a sales pitch, claiming to win on every dimension with no genuine nuance, is exactly the kind of content an AI assistant learns to distrust and avoid citing, since it reads as unreliable rather than informative. Content that states real trade-offs plainly, including where a competitor or an alternative approach genuinely wins, gets quoted more, precisely because it reads as trustworthy. A concrete example is a comparison page structured so that every single row favours the same side, which a careful AI summary treats as marketing copy and either declines to cite directly or cites with an explicit caveat about bias, undermining the very visibility the page was trying to earn. Writing the honest, nuanced answer a knowledgeable person would actually give, rather than the answer that sounds best in isolation, is consistently what produces content worth citing.
